Infernalist is the Witch that plays from the back, and the Essence Drain build is the cleanest expression of it. Essence Drain tags a target with a heavy chaos damage-over-time and you walk away; Contagion lays a plague on a pack so that when one infected enemy dies the rot leaps to everyone near it. Cast Contagion into a group, fire Essence Drain into the group, and the screen dissolves in a chain reaction while you are already moving. Bonestorm is the burst you charge and dump on anything too tanky for the DoT to handle in time - your boss button. The Infernalist part is what keeps a low-Life caster standing: Summon Infernal Hound and Skeletal Snipers bodyblock and draw aggro, and Demonic Possession - the keystone more than half the ladder runs - is the demon-form payoff the ascendancy is built around. Blasphemy turns a curse into a permanent aura on top.
Your rhythm is cast-and-drift. Throw Contagion onto a pack, put Essence Drain into it, and keep walking - the DoT does the killing and the deaths spread it, so standing still to watch is wasted time. Let the Infernal Hound and your Skeletal Snipers soak the front line while you stay at range. For a boss the loop changes: there's no pack to spread Contagion through, so you charge Bonestorm and dump it, re-apply Essence Drain to keep the DoT ticking, and let the snipers add chip between casts. The tension to respect is that DoT is patient - it does not delete a screen on contact like a hit build, it rots it over a second or two, so you are managing space and uptime rather than reacting. Play it like a fire that you light and walk away from.
Essence Drain is your main from the start - take it with the best spell/chaos wand or sceptre you can find and add Contagion the moment you have two skill slots to spare, because the combo is the build. Summon the Infernal Hound early as a free bodyguard. Don't chase resistances yet; stack Energy Shield and a little Life and keep your weapon current.
Once Contagion + Essence Drain spread reliably, your clear speed jumps - this is the spike where one death rots the whole pack. Add Skeletal Snipers as a second damage source and a front line, and slot Blasphemy so a curse is always weakening everything near you. Treat amulet and belt as your damage-and-resistance slots; resistances should be capped by the end of the campaign.
Clear is Contagion-into-a-pack then Essence Drain and move; single-target is charged Bonestorm with the snipers chipping. Lean into the Infernalist keystones - Demonic Possession is the one the ladder agrees on - and shift your gear toward DoT multiplier, cast speed, and the Energy Shield that keeps a low-Life caster alive. Reconcile the exact tree against a Path of Building export before you spend real currency.
Your main and your clear. A chaos projectile that leaves a strong damage-over-time on impact - you tag and move, you do not stand and channel. It is also the seed Contagion spreads, so the two are one tool.
The clear multiplier. It infects a pack, and when an infected enemy dies the DoT jumps to everyone nearby - so Essence Drain into a Contagion'd group becomes a chain reaction. Cast it first, drop the Drain into it, walk on.
The boss half. Charge a swirl of bone shards and unload them on a single target - your committed burst for anything the DoT is too slow to kill on its own. The one skill you stand still to land.
Set-and-forget utility. It turns a curse into an always-on aura, so everything around you is weakened automatically - quiet, permanent damage and a little defense for one slot.
Support damage and a front line. Ranged skeletons that chip away while your DoTs tick - extra single-target on bosses and, more importantly, bodies between you and the pack.
The Infernalist's signature. A demon dog that bodyblocks and pulls aggro, buying a back-line caster the space the build is balanced around. Keep it up at all times.
Essence Drain and Contagion are the recognizable Infernalist DoT pairing, and they are top-run for the right reason: chaos-over-time that spreads on death is one of the smoothest clears in the game, and Bonestorm covers the single-target it lacks. Demonic Possession is the keystone the ladder overwhelmingly agrees on, so treat that as load-bearing. The honest room to make it yours is the body layer: Skeletal Sniper vs more minions vs a pure-spell setup is preference, and Summon Infernal Hound is flavor-plus-utility rather than mandatory. Keep the ED + Contagion + Demonic Possession skeleton; season the support.

Infernalist is a low-Life back-line caster, so its defense is position and bodies, not toughness. The Infernal Hound and Skeletal Snipers exist as much to absorb hits and hold aggro as to deal damage - keep them alive and you rarely get touched. On top of that, run Energy Shield as your buffer (Infernalist leans into it), keep Blasphemy's curse weakening everything near you, cap resistances by end of campaign, and never let yourself get collapsed onto - your DoT works fine from across the room, so there is no reason to be close.
