What this build is

The Lich is the Witch that gives up Life entirely. Its keystone, Soulless Form - which more than three-quarters of the ladder runs - converts you to pure Energy Shield, so your defense is a shield that recharges rather than a health bar that doesn't. Around that, the build is bone and decay: Bonestorm is your hammer, a charged swirl of shards you unload on a single target, and Essence Drain + Contagion are the chaos-over-time pairing that clears packs - tag a group with Contagion, drop Essence Drain in, and as the first rotting enemy dies the DoT leaps to the rest. Entangle is what keeps a no-Life caster alive: root the pack so it can't reach you while the rot does its work. It plays from the back, patiently, letting damage-over-time and a recharging shield do what a Life pool can't.

The core loop

Clear is cast-and-drift: Contagion onto a pack, Essence Drain into it, Entangle anything that tries to close, and keep moving while the rot spreads. You are never standing still to watch - the DoT kills on its own. For a boss it flips to Bonestorm: charge it, unload the shards, re-apply Essence Drain to keep the chaos ticking, and Entangle to buy room between casts. The tension to respect is that Soulless Form makes your Energy Shield your everything - when it's up you're fine, when it breaks you're exposed, so the whole game is not getting hit while it recharges. Entangle and range are how you guarantee that; play like the rot is a fire you light and walk away from.

Leveling path

Acts 1-2 - Essence Drain and a chaos focusL1-~12

Essence Drain is your first main - take it with the best spell/chaos wand or sceptre you can find, and add Contagion the moment you have the slot, because the combo is the clear. Take Bonestorm for single-target. Before Soulless Form comes online you still have Life, so stack a little Life and Energy Shield both; after it, ES is everything.

Acts 3-4 - the rot chain + the shield identity~L12-~35

Once Contagion + Essence Drain spread reliably your clear speed jumps - one death rots the whole pack. Bring in Entangle as your primary defense (root the pack, not chase the kill) and slot Blasphemy so a curse is always weakening everything near you. Commit to Soulless Form and start stacking Energy Shield hard; resistances should be capped by the end of the campaign.

Maps / endgame - rot, root, recharge~L35+

Clear is Contagion-into-a-pack then Essence Drain and move; single-target is charged Bonestorm. Lean into the Lich keystones - Soulless Form is the one the ladder overwhelmingly agrees on - and shift your gear toward Energy Shield, DoT multiplier, and cast speed. Your survival is shield uptime, so respect recharge windows and keep packs Entangled. Reconcile the exact tree against a Path of Building export before you spend real currency.

Skill packages

B
main
Bonestorm

Your single-target hammer. Charge a swirl of bone shards and unload them on one target - the committed burst for bosses and rares the DoT is too slow to melt. The one skill you stand still to land.

ED
clear
Essence Drain

Your clear and your rot. A chaos projectile that leaves a strong damage-over-time on impact - you tag and move, you don't channel. It is also the seed Contagion spreads, so the two are one tool.

C
clear
Contagion

The clear multiplier. Infects a pack; when an infected enemy dies the DoT jumps to everyone nearby - so Essence Drain into a Contagion'd group becomes a chain reaction. Cast first, drop the Drain in, walk on.

E
skill
Entangle

Your defense, not an afterthought. Roots and snares a pack so it can't reach a body that has no Life to spare. On a Soulless Form caster, keeping enemies off you IS the survival plan.

B
utility
Blasphemy

Set-and-forget utility - a curse turned into an always-on aura, weakening everything around you for one slot. Quiet, permanent damage and a little defense.

TV
skill
Thrashing Vines

Supplementary control for when Entangle is down or a rare needs pinning. Extra pressure and crowd control; a comfort skill, not a core one.

Where it sits in the meta

ALich is A-tier this league (#5 most-played of 9) — that's popularity, where the ladder actually is, not a power ranking. See the full tier list →

Bonestorm leads the Lich ladder and Soulless Form is run by over three-quarters of it - that pairing (a bone nuke + the no-Life energy-shield identity) is the part the meta is genuinely telling you to keep. Essence Drain + Contagion is the same chaos-spread tech other casters use, here carried on a recharging shield instead of a Life pool. The honest room to make it yours is the control/utility layer: Entangle vs Thrashing Vines vs another curse is preference. Keep Bonestorm + the ES skeleton + Soulless Form; season the rest.

Staying alive

The Lich's defense is its keystone: Soulless Form makes you pure Energy Shield, so you defend with a shield that recharges between fights rather than a Life pool you patch up. That changes everything - the whole game is avoiding the hit that breaks your shield, then letting it recharge. Entangle (roots the pack), range (you're a back-line caster), and Blasphemy (everything near you is weakened) are how you guarantee the breathing room. Cap resistances by end of campaign and stack Energy Shield on every slot. Do not try to facetank - a Lich that gets collapsed onto is a dead Lich.
