What this build is

Where the grenade Mercenary lobs explosives, the Tactician shoots, and Stormblast Bolts is the skill the ladder lands on. Each bolt stacks lightning charge on what it hits and then detonates it in an area shock - so you rake a pack, the charge builds, and the whole group pops at once. Galvanic Shards is the other half: a rapid spread of ricocheting shards that 'shotguns' all of its hits into a single target at close range, which makes it your boss and panic-rare button. Herald of Thunder closes the loop - Stormblast already shocks, so the first enemy that dies calls lightning down on the rest. Mirage Archer and Supporting Fire keep your damage flowing, and the Tactician keystones the ladder agrees on - Unleash Hell! and Suppressing Fire - lean into exactly this ammo-and-covering-fire identity.

The core loop

Clear is a rake-and-detonate rhythm: sweep Stormblast Bolts across a pack to stack charge, and as the first shocked enemy dies Herald of Thunder chains the kill outward. You are not aiming at one body, you are painting a group. For single-target the build flips to range management - step into a boss so Galvanic Shards' whole spread connects ('shotgunning'), unload, then step back out as it reloads. Mirage Archer keeps firing while you reposition and Supporting Fire adds projectiles passively. The tension to respect is reload and charge time: your damage comes in bursts, not a constant stream, so you are always managing the window between a detonation and the next volley - which is the Tactician's whole flavor.

Leveling path

Acts 1-2 - Stormblast Bolts and a crossbowL1-~12

Stormblast Bolts is your main from the start - take it and the best crossbow you can find for damage and reload speed. Bring Galvanic Shards in as your single-target the moment you have the slot. Don't chase resistances yet; stack Life and keep the crossbow current, because everything you fire scales off the weapon.

Acts 3-4 - the shock chain comes online~L12-~35

Add Herald of Thunder once your bolts reliably shock - that pairing is the clear-speed jump where one kill chains lightning across the pack. Slot Mirage Archer for uptime and Supporting Fire for the extra projectiles, and treat gloves and belt as your speed-and-resistance slots. Resistances should be capped by the end of the campaign.

Maps / endgame - charge the pack, shotgun the boss~L35+

Clear is Stormblast-rake into a Herald-of-Thunder chain; single-target is stepping in and shotgunning Galvanic Shards. Lean into the Tactician keystones - Unleash Hell! and Suppressing Fire are the ones the ladder agrees on - and shift your gear from raw survival toward damage and the reload/attack speed that makes the burst cadence feel good. Reconcile the exact tree against a Path of Building export before you spend real currency.

Skill packages

SB
main
Stormblast Bolts

Your main and your clear. Each bolt stacks lightning charge on a target and then detonates it in an area shock, so you rake across a group and let the charge do the work rather than aiming a single shot. It is also the shock that feeds Herald of Thunder.

GS
single-target
Galvanic Shards

The single-target answer. A rapid spread of ricocheting lightning shards - harmless-looking until you stand close enough that the whole spread hits one target, which 'shotguns' a boss or a dangerous rare. The one time you close the distance on purpose.

HOT
clear
Herald of Thunder

The clear multiplier. A shocked enemy that dies calls lightning down on everything nearby; since Stormblast already shocks, your first kill in a pack chains across the rest. It pays off once your shocks are reliable, so it comes online a bit after your main.

MA
skill
Mirage Archer

A spectral copy that keeps firing where you aim. Free extra damage and uptime, most valuable on bosses where every extra volley while you reposition counts.

SF
utility
Supporting Fire

The Tactician's signature support. It lays covering fire that adds projectiles to your attacks, leaning into the ascendancy's ammo-and-support theme - quiet, passive extra damage for a slot.

FR
clear
Fragmentation Rounds

Supplementary clear for the gaps - a spread of shrapnel that shreds tight packs and adds physical pressure while Stormblast is mid-charge or you're reloading. A comfort skill, not a core one.

Where it sits in the meta

ATactician is A-tier this league (#4 most-played of 9) — that's popularity, where the ladder actually is, not a power ranking. See the full tier list →

Stormblast Bolts and Galvanic Shards are the two skills the Tactician ladder runs because they cover the two problems a crossbow build has - charge-and-detonate clear and a close-range single-target - and Herald of Thunder is the shock-chain glue. Unleash Hell! and Suppressing Fire are the keystones the meta is genuinely telling you to take. The honest room to make it yours is the support layer: Mirage Archer vs Supporting Fire vs Fragmentation Rounds is preference, not law. Keep the lightning-crossbow skeleton and the two keystones; season the rest.

Staying alive

Tactician is a ranged build, so its first defense is simply not being in melee - clear from across the room and only step in to shotgun a boss with Galvanic Shards, then step back. On top of that: shock is soft crowd control (a chained pack is busy dying, not hitting you), so favor reliable shock; cap resistances by end of campaign; keep Life on every slot; and run an Armour/Evasion hybrid with a sliver of Energy Shield. Don't try to facetank - the build wins by keeping the fight at bolt range.
