What this build is

Explosive Grenade is the skill the Witchhunter ladder converges on, and the build around it is satisfying in a way few others are: you are lobbing grenades that stick a fuse and then blow a pack apart, not holding a beam on one target. The structure is clean. Explosive Grenade is your clear. Gas Grenade lays a chaos cloud that you ignite - with that same Explosive Grenade or any fire hit - to detonate the whole thing for a heavy single-target burst, which is your boss answer. Permafrost Bolts are the cold crossbow filler that freezes things between throws, and a frozen kill feeds Herald of Ice to shatter the rest of the pack. The Witchhunter ascendancy itself leans on Zealous Inquisition, the keystone more than half the ladder runs, which is why this archetype shrugs off the caster and curse packs that punish squishier builds.

The core loop

Throw Explosive Grenade into the middle of a group and let the fuse do the work - you are seeding a blast, not aiming a shot, so lead the pack and keep moving. Permafrost Bolts go out between throws to chill and freeze; the first frozen kill sets off Herald of Ice and the pack folds. For a boss the rhythm changes: drop a Gas Grenade to lay the cloud, then ignite it with an Explosive Grenade for the big committed detonation, and repeat. Flash Grenade is your panic button - throw it on the rare that is about to delete you, blind it, and reset. The tension to respect is the fuse: grenades are not instant, so you are always throwing slightly ahead of where enemies will be, and that read is the skill of the build.

Leveling path

Acts 1-2 - grenade and a crossbowL1-~12

Explosive Grenade is your main from the start - take it and the best crossbow you can find for raw damage and reload speed. Lean on Flash Grenade early for the scary packs. Don't chase resistances yet; stack Life and keep the crossbow current, because everything you throw scales off the weapon.

Acts 3-4 - the freeze-and-shatter layer~L12-~35

Bring in Permafrost Bolts and then Herald of Ice once your freezes land reliably - that pairing is the clear-speed jump where one frozen kill clears the screen. Start practising the Gas Grenade plus Explosive Grenade ignite combo on tanky rares so it is muscle memory by the time real bosses arrive. Treat gloves and belt as your speed-and-resistance slots; resistances should be capped by the end of the campaign.

Maps / endgame - lead the pack, detonate the boss~L35+

Clear is grenade-into-the-group and let Herald of Ice chain the shatters; single-target is the gas-cloud detonation on repeat. Lean into the Witchhunter keystones - Zealous Inquisition is the one the ladder agrees on - and shift your gear focus from raw survival toward damage and the reload/throw speed that makes the cadence feel good. Reconcile the exact tree against a Path of Building export before you spend real currency.

Skill packages

EG
main
Explosive Grenade

Your main and your clear. It sticks a short fuse then detonates in a fire blast, so you throw it into a pack and lead their movement rather than aiming at one body. It is also the fire source that ignites your Gas Grenade.

GG
boss
Gas Grenade

The boss half of the build. It lays a lingering chaos cloud that does little on its own - until you ignite it (your Explosive Grenade is the easiest trigger) and the whole cloud detonates for a heavy burst. Lay, ignite, repeat.

PB
clear
Permafrost Bolts

The cold crossbow filler. It chills and freezes between grenade throws, which keeps you doing damage on the fuse downtime and, more importantly, seeds the freezes that Herald of Ice pays off.

HOI
clear
Herald of Ice

The clear multiplier. A frozen enemy that dies shatters and chains ice outward; once your freezes are reliable it turns Permafrost Bolts into screen-wide clear. It comes online a little after your main for that reason.

FG
utility
Flash Grenade

Your panic and setup tool. It blinds and helps stun a pack - best spent on the dangerous rare that would otherwise punish you while a grenade is mid-fuse.

FR
clear
Fragmentation Rounds

Supplementary clear for when grenades are on cooldown or fusing. A spread of shrapnel that shreds tight packs and adds steady physical pressure; a comfort skill, not a core one.

Where it sits in the meta

BWitchhunter is B-tier this league (#8 most-played of 9) — that's popularity, where the ladder actually is, not a power ranking. See the full tier list →

Explosive Grenade leads the Witchhunter ladder by a wide margin, and it is the herd being right rather than lazy - it is the cleanest clear the ascendancy has, and Gas Grenade plus an ignite is the single-target the rest of the kit lacks. The cold layer (Permafrost Bolts into Herald of Ice) and Zealous Inquisition are the parts the meta is genuinely telling you to keep. The honest room to make it yours is the support slots and your second utility grenade: Flash Grenade vs Cluster Grenade vs Fragmentation Rounds is preference, not law. Keep the grenade-and-freeze skeleton, season the rest.

Staying alive

Witchhunter defends better than most Mercenary lines because Zealous Inquisition and the Witchbane keystone blunt exactly the casters and curses that one-shot squishier builds - that ascendancy layer is a real defensive stat, not a footnote. On top of it, play the ranges the build wants: grenades and bolts are ranged, so you should rarely be in melee, and Flash Grenade buys space when you are. Cap resistances by end of campaign, keep Life on every slot, and lean on freeze (a frozen enemy is not attacking) as crowd control that doubles as defense. Armour/Evasion hybrid gear and a sliver of Energy Shield round it out.
